GCSE Science

Biology is the study of living organisms, their workings and the interplay between them. The IGCSE course aims to give students a knowledge and understanding of biological facts, concepts and principles, while developing experimental skills. This course is ideally suited to those wishing to pursue the subject to A Level, or those simply wishing to gain an understanding of the workings of life around them.

Course content

Content is split into five main topics:

  1. The nature and variety of living organisms
  2. Structures and functions in living organisms
  3. Reproduction and inheritance
  4. Ecology and the environment
  5. Use of biological resources

What have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to?

International GCSEs enable successful progression to A Level and beyond.

How will I learn?

You will experience a variety of teaching methods and styles and laboratory work. Croydon Metropolitan College has a well-equipped laboratory for the study of Biology. There is a textbook and website access specifically for this specification and classes employ a wide range of practical teaching and learning techniques.

How will I be assessed?

We follow the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exam board.  We will be teaching the new 9-1 qualification from 2017 September onwards and the qualification will be first assessed in summer 2019.

The course is examined through two externally-assessed written papers that can cover material from anywhere in the syllabus. Experimental skills are assessed through written examinations.

Paper 1 – 2 hours and 61.1% of the total International GCSE

Paper 2 – 1 hour 15 minutes and 38.9% of the total International GCSE

Chemistry GCSE is an excellent science subject for you to consider as you will develop a very good understanding of general scientific techniques as well as specialist knowledge and understanding of Chemistry. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their understanding of scientific theory and its applications alongside developing their practical skills.

Studying this course provides a solid basis for students wishing to progress to Advanced GCE Level or equivalent qualifications, focusing on key chemistry theory. Practical work is an important and essential aspect of the course.

Physics is the science of the fundamental concepts of field, force, radiation and particle structures, which are inter-linked to form unified models of the behaviour of the material universe. From such models, a wide range of ideas, from the broadest issue of the development of the universe over time to the numerous and detailed ways in which new technologies may be invented, have emerged. These have enriched both our basic understanding of, and our many adaptations to, our material environment.
